Formerly-incarcerated individuals face many barriers to reentry, including:

  • Lack of safe living quarters
  • Discrimination by potential employers
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Inadequate care for substance abuse and mental/physical health
  • 95% of the 30,000 current inmates in Tennessee will eventually be released
  • 70% of the formerly incarcerated in Tennessee commit additional crimes
  • 50% of those released in Tennessee will return to incarceration within 3 years
  • 25% of the world's prison population is within the US. However, the US is only 5% of the world's population
